Can We Repair?
The short answer is: Yes, The Islander can be repaired.
We’ve heard conflicting opinions—some say the damage is too severe, while others point to the engineer’s report that confirms repair is possible. The truth is that although the hurricanes caused significant damage, the worst of it is isolated. The most severe impact was to the southwest corner of the South Building—specifically Units 4 and 5. Even there, engineers have confirmed the walls can be repaired, strengthened, and brought back to safe standards.

When you step back and look at the property as a whole, the more severe damage represents only a portion of the overall structure. With proper planning and the right leadership, the majority of repairs could be completed within 4-6 months, depending on permitting, costs, and contractor scheduling.

-
The North Building sustained the lesser damage overall. While the beachfront units (12 and 13) require more attention than others, they remain fully repairable.

-
The South Building saw its greatest impact at the southwest corner, specifically units 4 and 5. These will require the most structural reinforcement, but they too can be repaired to meet modern standards.

-
Across the ground-floor units, the needed repairs are far less complex than structural work. With the exception of the more heavily impacted units (4, 5, 12, and 13), most of the lower units are expected to come back together relatively quickly. Some second-floor units may even be ready for owners to return before the entire project is complete.

Of course, nothing about repair is instant—but it is absolutely doable. A motivated board, focused on the owners’ best interests, could bring The Islander back faster than many believe. With teamwork, transparency, and determination, owners could once again enjoy this special place we all love.

For decades The Islander has been our home away from home. There is no reason it cannot be again. Repairing and strengthening the buildings doesn’t just bring us back—it gives us the chance to make The Islander stronger for years to come.
So What's It Gonna Cost Us?
It Is A Real Possibility

Hope 4 The Islander
The big question on everyone’s mind is cost. While no one can provide exact numbers until formal contractor bids are received, everything we know so far points to a manageable outcome. Two engineering reports have already been completed, and once detailed proposals are in hand, we’ll have a clearer picture.

Here’s what we do know:
-
Insurance proceeds are in place.
-
Association reserves are well-funded.
-
Together, these resources may cover most — or even all — of the repair expenses.

That’s not to say there will be no assessment, but if one is needed, it should be minimal. With the right board in place — one that prioritizes cost oversight and smart decision-making — owners can expect the project to move forward efficiently and responsibly.
